“True happiness is to enjoy the present without anxious dependence on the future.”
—Seneca the Younger, Letters to Lucilius, Letter 2, trans. Richard M. Gummere (1917)
Worry creeps into our awareness when we turn our focus away from the present moment, toward the future—a time that doesn’t yet exist. Worry is the work of the imagination vibrating at its lowest frequency.
We often allow undisciplined thought-forms to project a worst-case scenario onto the movie screen of our inner minds, as if it were truth. As imagined, this invites a whirl of chaotic energies and unreal imaginings to fill our personal atmosphere. Once we find ourselves in this state, it is difficult to return to the truth of the present moment without the discipline of both heart and mind.
Reiki encourages a present-mind focus, in both theory and practice. Dr. Usui’s Reiki precepts guide us to free the mind-body-spirit from worry, just for today. By setting the intention to stay present and reminding ourselves of this goal often, we can turn an anxiety habit into a daily practice of peace.
May we choose the peace of Reiki above all else and allow it to heal the pattern of projecting worry into imagined futures.
Just for today, I am releasing worry. I am peace in action.
This reflection appears in my forthcoming book, Just For Today–A Reiki Daybook, a yearlong companion for Reiki practitioners and spiritual seekers alike.
